Specifications:

  • Measuring Instructions - Stand your horse as square as possible, measure from the center of chest around side of the body to the point of the horse's rump just before the tail. If you horse ends up measuring between sizes always round up to the next size to ensure full coverage.
  • Washing Instructions - Machine wash with cold water – Gentle cycle with mild detergent. Air Dry or Machine Dry/No Heat
  • Horses Turned Outside without Shelter - Turnout Sheet and Blanket materials are waterproof and designed to keep your horse dry, however if your horse is turned out in a field without a run in shed or shelter during prolonged rain or heavy downpours your horse may still get wet especially in the neck and tail areas.
  • When using a blanket or sheet it is critical to monitor the fluctuating climate and temperatures even with a blanket that is waterproof and breathable. The wicking properties of a breathable blanket are designed to wick away normal body heat, when a blanket is too heavy the heat and moisture cannot be wicked away fast enough causing your horse to sweat. The temperature and the length of your horse’s coat will determine what weight of blanket you should use. For this reason, most people who choose to blanket horses have several articles of horse clothing that offer varying levels of warmth.
  • When selecting a blanket ensure to take into account your horse’s behavior, environment or other horses that may be turned out with your horse. The lower the denier number the less strength the material has. 420 Denier and 600 Denier are not recommended for horses that bite, chew or rub on blankets or for horses turned out with a companion or in a group. Always ensure your horse’s blanket is properly fitted and all straps are adjusted correctly, if a blanket is too tight or too loose, straps may break and material may tear. For younger horses or horses turned out with a companion or in groups, it is recommended to purchase 1200 Denier or 1680 Denier material as these are stronger materials and are less likely to tear. Certain types of fencing such as barbwire or foreign objects such as nails will easily tear any blanket no matter what the denier, always inspect the area in which your horse is kept to remove any nails or jagged fencing that may cause damage. There are no horse blankets that are guaranteed to not rip or tear.

Great Blanket, 5/22/2013

Esper from Minnesota

I purchased two of these blankets for my horses and i put them on them when it was 48 degrees outside and they warmed right up! Only one of the blanket slips but it's not very much. I'm very pleased with the price of these blankets for the quality and my horses are very happy. I wish they would come in more colors though. I had to get Lime green and purple for my two geldings and they looks pretty girly but hey, they work. Plus: they have been rearing and bucking and playing with them all week and they haven't gotten them off or torn. A+ from me.

Great blanket, 4/8/2013

Pierrotti from Maine

This is a great blanket for cold weather. It is very waterproof and warm. Our six horses use these and not one of the blankets have ripped. This is a great blanket for a great price. They do tend to run a little large though.

Couldn't Last, 1/21/2013

Megan from Illinois

I bought TWO of these blankets for my horses a couple years ago because of the awesome price. Absolutely loved them, but they only went through light use. This season I have one of my mares in it 24/7 & it's absolutely trashed. The tail flap is chewed to shreds, one of the straps constantly comes undone, its got pops & dings in it from getting snagged on stuff, & recently suffered a HUGE rip in it. This is NOT a tough blanket. Price is great, but not when I have to buy a new one every year.

I love these!, 1/1/2013

Angela Butterfield from Chesterville, Me

These are great blankets! I bought 3 of them last year for my horses. The horses that I had liked to bite each other and the blankets survived. I didn't measure one of my horses right so one of the blankets was too small, but that's not the company's fault. Overall they're great blankets!

Does not last, 12/30/2012

Gabby from Texas

This blanket is okay if you put your horse in a padded stall. This blanket did not last one day in the pasture. The lining rips really easy and and I already have to buy another one to get through the rest of the winter. This blanket does not wash well either and holds water, which makes the blanket heavy and makes it stink. I would not buy this blanket if your going to turn your horse out.

great blanket for the price, 12/26/2012

sugarcreekarabians from Columbus, IN

this blanket has kept my 28 year old mare warm and dry. You can't beat this quality for the price. she rolls and lays down quite a bit and the blanket isn't snagged or anything.

Horrible Product, 12/13/2012

manyponies from Dolan Springs, AZ

I bought four of these blankets. First time I put them on my horses when the forecast called for rain, after a half an hour in the rain the horses were cold and SOAKING WET!!!! These are neither water PROOF nor water resistant. What a rip off! OH, and speaking of RIPS. They tore within an hour, just from a horse rolling in sand...... I want my money back!!!!!

Love It, 12/6/2012

Deb McEnery from Linton, IN

Have used the 2 blankets on my young gelding and old gelding for a few nights now..They enjoy them and have not ripped or otherwise damaged them. The older gelding even defended his blanket from the Stallion who was more than a little curious over his best buddy's new attire! The price was amazing, I did read other reviews that were not as flattering..But am quite delighted with the quality.

Good blanket, but NOT water PROOF water RESISTANT, 11/25/2012

Kristina from Christiansburg, VA

I bought 4 of these blankets and yes they are nice, my horses can stay in them out in the pasture(with woods) and not tear them up. I wash them in the washing machine and hang them to dry. (Don't take long to dry either) and they are still GREAT! They are very good at keeping them warm on windy days and are great for LIGHT rain for SHORT periods of time! Or a light rain, no rain for a while then light rain again. But even a LIGHT rain to even a mist for a long time(over night and early part of the day) and these WILL leak through! NOT just the neck and tail areas! I mean right down the back line under the blanket my horses get WET. So I do not like the description, but if the description is changed to water RESISTANT then these would be WONDERFUL blankets. My horses are always very cozy on WINDY days! (We had 20 to 40 MPH winds the other day and they still stayed very warm under the blankets!)

Not worth it!, 11/24/2012

KB from Fresno, CA

My horse wore this for one night when it was 45 degrees out and within an hour, he was completely drenched in sweat! He normally wears a canvas storm blanket that's much heavier and warmer and he never sweats in it even when it's up to 70 degrees outside. I thought that this would be a great lighter sheet as it is really thin, but it's not breathable at all! Very disappointing and I purchased a new sheet for him that functions much better.

Okay but....., 8/1/2012

Kat from Michigan

Bought 3, one for my Appaloosa, one for my haflinger, and one for my miniature. Miniature managed to put holes in the outer shell within a week Haflinger managed to slip out of it and leave it in the middle of the pasture. Good blanket, but not for a horse that rubs or is really hyper or an escape artist.

Blanket lasted exactly 2 days, 3/26/2012

Jan from Placerville, CA

Somehow my horse managed to rip it to shreds, actually tearing it in two complete peices down the middle. No low tree limbs, smooth polycord fencing, don't know how he got it so mangled. The buckles hold up well though, as do the elastic leg straps, it was still buckled around his whithers (the front buckles) and the other half of the blanket was dragging about 5 feet behind him on the ground by the leg straps! The saying is true, you get what you pay for I guess.

Ripped after 3 uses!!!!, 2/10/2012

Katie from Norco, CA

The blanket fell apart!! It has been on my horse, MAYBE, 3 times this winter and was brand new 3 months ago. It hasn't rained much in CA this year so my horse hasn't really needed it. But this past Tuesday i put it on as it was supposed to rain, i came out the next day to take it off to find it hanging off my horse! It had somehow completely ripped from the withers down the back. i am dissappointed in the product and will not be getting another. On the plus side it was only $40...but that's $40 that i could put towards a better blanket!

Very Impressed!, 1/21/2012

Jenna from Chico, Ca

so, bought cheap blankets as it has been my experience that when one puts a turn-out rug on a tb in the field it will only last one season... if you are VERY lucky. turns out, these blankets are better than some of the expensive rugs i've bought :) kept them dry with howling winds, frigid (for nothern cali) and a years worth of rain in two days. i assumed they would be soaked through and went to pull them off this evening, only to be shocked to find that the horses are still dry under them. my person approval to tough one turnout blankets! takes a lot for me to give my personal endorsement, but for $50 each, (and they come in violent pink) i feel i've already gotten my money's worth :D

Great blanket!, 1/20/2012

Krystal from Maryland

This blanket came on my horse five years ago! Naturally, it's needed a couple of patches, but it has remained remarkably waterproof! It's plenty warm for my TB in the winter. I am only now about to buy him a new tough-1 blanket because two young horses tore a 1 foot square hole in the hind end. It had a good run!

Great fit but terrible fabric, 1/9/2012

gretay from WA

I have never seen a blanket that ripped so easily. My mellow 19 year old mare was turned out alone and still put several rips in this blanket. I will never buy another Tough-1 blanket, no matter how cheap the price. I think material this wimpy should not be used on a horse blanket- it is actually a safety hazard! After too many rips, I threw this blanket in the trash :(

Horrible, 12/29/2011

Chris from Charlotte, nc

I bought this blanket for my horse who is very easy on blankets and is in a pasture with one horse who is older and very well behaved. The buckles didn't fit right so they always came undone and ended of ripping from being stepped on. The material is cheap and tears very easily I had it for 2 weeks and it completely fell apart. Do not buy this blanket save your money and buy a better quality blanket that will last long.

Lasted less than 45 days, 12/16/2011

Lori from Mesa, Az

I am very disappointed with the quality of this blanket. My horse only wears it at night and sleeps in the barn and it didn't even make it for 45 days. He is not tough on blankets either. The outer shell is torn and one of the surcingle buckle's stitches have torn out. Now I know why the price was so low. It's CHEAP!

I love this blanket! , 12/10/2011

JANICE PUTNEY from Tucson, AZ

I bought this blanket for my 28 year old mare. It has kept her warm and DRY in a couple of very cold windy rain/ice storms! We have had unseasonably cold wet weather that would have had her shivering and wet without this blanket. This blanket appears to run a bit big. My mare measured 73 in. so I ordered the next size up, 75, as was recommended on the sizing chart and I think a 69 would've fit.

Lasted only 1 Week, 11/22/2011

Betty from El Paso, TX

This blanket looked great and fit well, but was manufactured of extremely thin fabric. My mare wore it a total of 4 TIMES before it was ripped completely through both the outer shell and inner linings. If your horse is stabled alone inside it may last, but don't expect to use it for turnout AT ALL!!! Tough 1??? NOT!!!

Don't bye, 11/22/2011

Mel from Canada

I bought the blanket before the rain started getting bad around here. Put it on my girl, came back in the morning to find her very damp underneath. So much so that she ended up with rain scald. I tried to return it and couldn't because it was over the 30 day return policy and there has been no response from the manufacture. Don't buy. I will not purchase anything else from Tough-1.

Debbie SC from Walterboro SC

I bought the tough one turn out blanket. I was very dissapointed in the blanket. It arrived on Friday, put it on Friday night, turned mare out Saturday. Brought her that afternoon to find that the blanket was ripped on the front where the straps fasten. One days wear and the blanket rips. I would not recommend this blanket to anyone. I wish I hadn't bought it. The ratings I would not have chosen any of them if you could have wrote the review with chosing one. The price was very good. the product just wasn't

You get what you pay for in this case., 8/24/2011

Jamie from PNW

I bought one of these out of desperation; new horse and no blankets I already had fit. This was at the feed store so I grabbed it. IT DOES NOT BREATHE. Anytime I've put this blanket on my horse, he's been a wet gross mess under it. Any other blanket, including a much heavier weight WB Taka, warm and dry under. Such a bad blanket I wouldn't even give it away. I put it in the dumpster. Do yourself a favor, spend an extra $20 and buy something quality.

Save Your Money!!!, 4/13/2011

Susan from Acampo, CA

I purchased 3 of these beautiful Tough-1 blankets for my 3 horses. 1 blanket ripped within 2 weeks, another blanket ripped and broke off a belly strap AND the third one ripped, lost one leg strap AND NOW I LOOK OUTSIDE AND MY HORSE HAS IT WRAPPED AROUND HIS NECK LIKE A NECKLACE. VERY FRUSTRATING. My horses are older and do NOT play and/or bite each other. Next time, I will pay more and hope for much better quality. I bought these blankets in NOVEMBER. It is now APRIL. ONLY 5 Months.

Paid for itself, 3/20/2011

nanoukvt from Bend, OR & Waitsfield, VT

I purchased 4 of these blanket, this is the second winter with them. The first winter was in Central OR, which is not terrible weather in the winter, but I bought it for 3 young horses and one older mare. They held up great and kept everyone warm and dry. This winter the horses are in Vermont, much colder and more precipitation. The blankets have held up to more than I imagined it would, kept everyone warm and dry. My horses are not usually hard on blankets but they do rough house out in the pasture. The blankets show no signs of inability to withstand their antics. I love it and would buy more.

D. Klix from Bellingham, WA

I bought this as my guy is getting older and colder in the wet winter months of Washington. He loves it and I love it. Stays nice and dry and toasty warm underneath. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. Great price, free shipping at the time. Fits good and buckles are really holding up. No rips and tears and he rolls and rolls in it. Gets muddy and then rinses off in the rain.

this blanket didn't last 2 days in my barn. the slightest nip from another horse tears it to shreds. Would not advise this blanket unless you have one horse and absolutely nothing your horse can snag it on. Like having paper for denier

Don't spend the money, 2/10/2011

Mimi from Fort Worth, Texas

I bought 5 of these blankets in December and by the end of January, not one of them was still together enough to use. They are super light weight and flimsy. They outer layer tears with even the slightest pull. I didn't even turn the horses out in them except once or twice. I know one of my mares is tough on blankets but all five of these blankets fell completely apart in less than 30 days. I didn't expect too much out of them for $50, but I would never buy one again.

Very happy, 2/2/2011

diane from South Central Texas

I needed a lightweight to medium warmth blanket, and this one was on sale with free shipping! So I bought it - but not thrilled about the color choices. Picked lime green. Actually is not as bad as it seems. The blanket itself is lightweight (to carry) but as soon as I put it on my horse, I could feel her getting warmer. It does make a crinkly sound, but its not bothering her. She's had it on 24 hours now and no tears, no slips. I was glad the D rings were on this lightweight blanket too, for attaching the neck hood which I already had. Everything seems to fit her very well, and I am very happy with the product.

Nice blanket, 1/26/2011

Rileigh from hatfield, ma

good blanket, nice quality straps and buckles, has rubber pieces on belly straps to help with keeping them in place as well as overlaying fabric on all buckles to protect and hold them in place as well. The fabric is very noisy and almost plasticy feeling but has held up to all day turn out and is very waterproof.

Horse blankets, 1/21/2011

Jenniffer from Prague, Oklahoma

I bought these for the icey and snowy months. They are working out great for the temps between 9-20 degrees and the ice and snow. Seems to be keeping them warm and very dry. the smallest blanket i bought for my 2 year old mare is to big for her (but should be okay next year). The only problem i've had with them is with a few tears. One of the mares likes to bite one of my horses on the hindend and it has caused a hole and the other horse has gotten to close to the barbwire fence and caused ripes. But the third one has not riped at all. So i don't know if the two are just hard on them or if the other one is just easy on it. Either way they have been pretty good blankets and would consider buying them again. I might spend a little more and buy the next step up on the outer shell for the other two horses. I have fixed the ripes and tears and that seems to be holding for the time being.

Torn To Shreds, 1/20/2011

Heather from Winston-Salem, NC

I have a horse who is really tough on her blankets. Within a week, she had this one torn to shreds. I suppose this blanket would be okay for an older, calm, laid back horse, but I definitely would NOT recommend it for a young, active horse.

Shocked, 1/9/2011

Barrel Junkie from Humboldt county ca

I bought this blanket for my sons horse , it was a x-mass gift.we put it on and it fit perfect ,like it was ment for her , it looked nice and didnt bind or rub , but it only lasted about 24 hrs , we went out to feed and her blanket was on the floor of her stall it had ripped right down the middle from the withers to her hips . I have never seen anything like it .Hopefully this is a fluke thing ,but it makes me question the name Tough 1 .

Not Very Tough, 1/9/2011

Jerri S from Coos Bay OR

I put it on my horse last night and this morning there are tears in it already. This horse doesnt tear anything. My other blankets that I put on her were to small. I put this on her and it fit beautiful. But I thought it would last thru the winter. I guess I will go back to my other ones, and they were cheapy blankets.

"LOVE IT", 1/5/2011

Ryan from Franklin, VA

I bought this for my Tennesse Walking Horse mare and I absolutely love it! It fits her perfectly, looks great on her and is bright so that hunters don't mistake her for tonights dinner and it is just heavy enough for the weather we get around this area! And every now and then when we have a freak snow storm she has a heavier blanket! Thank you so much I love this product!

Great blanket, 1/4/2011

love my horse from Kingston, NY

This is an excellant bargain! My horse is turned out with other horses and it has held up very well. I only wish I had bought a heavier one but this is a great one for the beginning of winter. Looking for a heavy one now :)

GREAT blanket!!, 1/1/2011

Jane from Michigan

This is a great blanket! In Michigan, you can count on winter being really cold, snowy, and often wet. This blanket keeps my horse super warm, but he's never been TOO warm. In fact, where the blanket starts, (at the neckline), it looks as if I've clipped him; his coat is just a little bit thicker than his summer coat! This is the second year I've had it, and there are only tiny little holes around the shoulder and a small tear on his hip, and after sewing it, it hasn't ripped again. My horse tends to be very rough with his blankets, but he's remained the only horse on the property who hasn't destroyed his blanket yet. This is a GREAT buy!!!

Very good product, 12/27/2010

Christine from Aiken, SC

I have used this blanket on my Haflinger mare. She is a little frisky one and likes to run, roll and sleep in it with no signs of wear or tear (just some dirt as to be expected0. I would recommend this item and would purchase another.

WOW, 12/26/2010

Emily Hammar from Swans Island, ME

i have a tough 1 blanket for my old appaloosa, Cowboy, and i am thrilled on how warm and clean these wonderful blankets make my horses feel. I would never choose any other blanket in the world because of this miraculous story i heard in my young rider magazine. I mentioned how this young girl got a call telling her how her horse, Cash, got hit by a truck and that the vet said he would have suffered massive gashes in his side, or mabye even death, if it weren't for the tough 1 blanket he had on. There was only a little gash in the side of the blanket! It was either the blanket, or a miracle. You choose.

Material makes disturbing noise, 12/19/2010

Sarah from NC

My horse freaked out by the crinkling noise of the material when touched or horse moves... noise like wadding up paper. Very dangerous. Would not recommend for this reason. Returning one I purchased.

NICE BLANKET!, 11/25/2010

guest from IDAHO

I got the purple and it's actually a really pretty blue/purple. Very nice and fits great! I think it's probably just the right weight for my horse due to he is in a Barn and can come out but if he was outside all of the time, I would advise getting a heavier blanket. It's a little on the lighter side in my opinion. But it does the job - water proof and warmer then without. I love the way it fits.

Lasted a week , 10/26/2010

Jane Wilson from Minneapolis Mn

I was looking for a lightweight blanket in a bright color (hunting season) and this one fit that bill. However, I put it on my horse and within a week it was ripped to nearly uselessness.

Love this, 10/9/2010

Jill from Wittmann, AZ

I love these blankets I bought 4 four my horses because my other ones are basicly sheets and it colder in the winter in Arizona then most people think. they are alot thicker then i thought and they keep my horses so warm. my stallion lays down and night and tries to curl up to fit every bit of him he can under it he even wont let you take it off if he wants to keep it on. they also work great in the rain normally i keep my horses in but my stud was out one time and they worked great! i love the colors too we got lime to match out show colors and they fit great i always order a little bit bigger then i measure and they have planty of room for the horses to move around in
